Nitrotyrosine (NT)
3-Nitro-L-Tyrosine; 3-Nitrotyrosine
Nitrotyrosine is a product of tyrosine nitration mediated by reactive nitrogen species such as peroxynitrite anion and nitrogen dioxide. It is detected in a number of pathological conditions and is considered a marker of NO-dependent oxidative stress. Nitrotyrosine is found in some disease-affected tissues, such as the cornea in keratoconus.
Nitrotyrosine has been identified as an indicator of cell damage and inflammation, as well as of the production of NO. It is believed that measuring the concentration of nitrotyrosine will serve as a marker for damage caused by NO in the cell.
Previous studies have shown that nitrotyrosine has been found in inflammatory conditions such as atherosclerotic plaques and theumatoid arthritis, among others.
