Lactate Dehydrogenase A (LDHA)
LDH-A; LDH-M; LDH1; PIG19
Lactate dehydrogenases exist in four distinct enzyme classes. Two of them are cytochrome c-dependent enzymes with each acting on either D-lactate (EC 1.1.2.4) or L-lactate (EC 1.1.2.3). The other two are NAD(P)- dependant enzymes with each acting on either D-lactate (EC 1.1.1.28) or L-lactate (EC 1.1.1.27). This article is about the NAD(P)- dependant L-lactate dehydrogenase.
Lactate dehydrogenase A catalyzes the conversion of L-lactate and NAD
+ to pyruvate and NADH in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis. LDHA is found predominantly in muscle tissue and belongs to the lactate dehydrogenase family. Mutations in LDHA have been linked to exertional myoglobinuria.
