Integrin Alpha 1 (ITGa1)
ITG-A1; CD49-A; VLA1; CD49a
CD49a encodes the alpha 1 subunit of integrin receptors. This protein heterodimerizes with the beta 1 subunit to form a cell-surface receptor for collagen and laminin. The heterodimeric receptor is involved in cell-cell adhesion and may play a role in inflammation and fibrosis. The alpha 1 subunit contains an inserted (I) von Willebrand factor type I domain which is thought to be involved in collagen binding.
The integrin alpha-1 chain associates with the beta-1 chain (ITGB1) to form a heterodimer that functions as a dual laminin/collagen receptor in neural cells and hematopoietic cells. It has a role in cell attachment and neurite outgrowth on laminin and collagen as well as in peripheral nerve regeneration
