Fatty Acid Binding Protein 8, Myelin (FABP8)
PMP2; M-FABP; MFABP; MP2; P2; Peripheral Myelin Protein 2; Myelin P2 Protein
The fatty-acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are a family of carrier proteins for fatty acids and other lipophilic substances such as eicosanoids and retinoids. These proteins are thought to facilitate the transfer of fatty acids between extra- and intracellular membranes.
FABP 8 (also called peripheral myelin protein 2, PMP2) is a small, basic, and cytoplasmic lipid binding protein of peripheral myelin. The gene is about 8 kb long and consists of four exons. All exon-intron junction sequences conform to the GT/AG rule. The 5'-flanking region of the gene has a TA-rich element (TATA-like box) and a single defined transcription initiation site detected by the primer extension method.
